My Next NovelThe Association of Foreign Spouses: SynopsisDahlia is at a crossroads in her marriage. When she threatens George with divorce he coolly suggests that she should return to London, but that she must go as empty-handed as she came. Dahlia is initially too traumatised by her husbands latest indiscretion to understand the significance of this statement; Eva, however, is not. She had recently tried to obtain a residence permit and was told: We do not have provisions in our legislation to provide foreign spouses with indefinite permission to stay in our country. At this time, all you qualify for is residency conditional upon marriage to a citizen of the Republic of Ghana. The Association of Foreign Spouses is the story of mixed marriages in Ghana in the 1980s and the foreign women who have to cope with the cultural challenges these marriages present as well as the reactions of the families they have left behind. They are struggling with the economic and political turmoil of the country which is trying to adapt to yet another new military government. The shelves in the supermarkets are beginning to fill up again and life appears to be returning to normal once more. Now, though, there is another coup, this time bloodier and more chaotic than any before, which has a direct impact on the lives of the characters. Their vulnerability is clear to the foreign wives and they decide they must act. |
